Diary of Growing Lupines from Seed

Growing Lupines from Seed in Anchorage, Alaska

I ordered the following varieties of lupine seeds: Russell, Noble Maiden, Governor, Tutti Frutti, Wuthering Heights, My Castle, The Pages, Red Flame, Dwarf and Minarette.

March 22, 2014
Soaked seeds in water for 48 hours.

March 24, 2014
Planted indoors in potting soil in 1.5" wide 2" deep containers. Watered daily.

March 28, 2014
Sprouted. Moved to sunny window.

April 20, 2014
Put outside for one hour. Increased outdoor time by one hour each day during daylight hours.

April 28, 2014
Dwarf variety grew too big for containers.

May 3, 2014
Started leaving outside overnight.

Roots could have grown a few more inches if I would have had containers deeper than 2 inches.

May 20, 2014
Planted in yard's rocky dirt about 10" apart and watered daily.

June 4, 2014
Plants in the ground were 4 - 6" tall.
Plants I had transferred to larger containers earliest in May were now 7 - 8" tall.
Should have started with larger containers.

June 20, 2014
Potted dwarf varieties bloomed.

  1. Your garden is very charming! I love lupines and don't see them nearly enough in gardens here. I grew them a few times and they didn't winter over for me, so you will have to share how they do next spring.

  2. They've never wintered over for me in the past either, so they do end up taking a lot of time, but they're so pretty!
